MISC. INFO
Ellen was unaware of Alec’s plans to put her into stasis, as he kept most of his AI research secretive and had placed her in stasis after she had passed out in the hospital.
The Ryder twins give two different accounts of how their parents met. When asked, Scott claims Ellen was swept up by Alec’s “bad boy in the uniform act.” According to Sara, however, Ellen found the act “cheesy” and tried repeatedly to flirt with an oblivious Alec, resulting in her getting nowhere until she asked him out directly. Ellen decided to never confirm which happened and enjoys teasing Alec about their meeting.
As a result of her AEND, Ellen still struggles with some common symptoms of most neurodegenerative diseases. These symptoms include: Forgetfulness, Problems with Concentration, Anxiety, and Bradycardia.
BACKGROUND.
Born as Ellen Harlow, she was a pioneering designer of biotic implants. In the 2150s, she was a leading biomedical and cybernetic researcher at UFRJ in Rio de Janeiro. When human biotics began to emerge as a scientific field, Ellen found possible applications for her work in neuro-integrated wetware. Her early designs for biotic implants formed the framework for later L2 and L3 models.
At some point in her life, Ellen met Alec Ryder when he was posted to Rio for N7 training before the First Contact War. She eventually joined Alec on the Citadel when he was posted there as military attaché, and gave birth to Ryder twins on the station in 2163.
Unfortunately, element zero―the catalyst for biotic mutations―proved a hazardous material, poorly understood in the early years of human biotics. After repeated accidental exposures, Ellen was diagnosed with a terminal illness known as neurodegenerative disorder (later known as AEND). Soon, Alec begins developing SAM in a last-ditch effort to save her.
She spent the last few hours of her life with her family by her side while encouraging her children to live their lives to the fullest, before having her last conversation with Alec and telling him to be a good father. Alec then puts her into stasis aboard Ark Hyperion under the false alias of Elizabeth Reilly.
Eventually, after the events of Andromeda, she wakens up from stasis and reunited with her children after a cure for her AEND is administered. She learns what Alec had done for the family, of his death, and of Eden’s death, and promises her children that no matter what happens she will never leave them. Ellen becomes a formal member of the Initiative and remains on the Nexus as a researcher and scientist. Here, she continues her research into the abilities of human biotics and the enhancement of implants.
