MISC. INFO
Powers:- Argent Power — As a result of the Argent Energy crystals in her heart, Jashera can briefly tap into demonic abilities through the metabolizing and storage of the energy. Sudden stress can cause explosive energy fluctuations in which her heart rate, naturally, speeds up and triggers the Argent Energy to intervene as a stabilizer. As the Argent Energy is active and coursing through her system, Jashera gains increased strength and agility, allowing her to take hits that she should not be able to survive. Of course, this comes with the caveat that as her heart rate gets dangerously high, the Argent Energy acts as a sort of defibrillator. Due to her being human, her body can't regulate the energy and her heart will stop so that she doesn't burn herself to death. Jashera will experience sudden and intense cardiac arrest, and remain unconscious until her heart rate reaches acceptable levels (for her condition). During this event, two notable appearance changes are as follows: Her eyes will become more "demon-like", turning golden and developing an intense glow, thhe surgical scarring on her chest from her cardiac procedures will glow red with an intensity that makes them appear as if they are cracking. When she wakes up, she will be operating under normal regulation (AFib, in her case).
- That said, it is possible for Jashera to gain control over the output of energy. It would take a lot of work, and she wouldn't be able to do it alone/would need the help of someone with an intimate understanding of Argent Energy (e.g., The Slayer, Samuel Hayden) to help establish controlled triggers. Once she does, controlled triggers would fall back onto any extreme emotions, or intense focus in/out of combat. In addition to this, if Jas were to gain full control over her powers, the results would be catastrophic.
- She can attune herself to the core energies of Hell once shhe self-actualizes. The concentration of energy flowing within her body would surpass the largest nuclear weapons and, should she be unable to control it, would level the area it releases in. The building up of this energy, regardless of the level of preparation she hahs, would be excruciating. She becomes disoriented but conscious, unable to respond to basic lines of questioning beyond sobbing and screaming; she'll claw at her clothes and herself, trying to "release" the energy by any means necessary (think of Atom Eve from Invincible, for example). Once she does stabilize, she's exhausted and weakened. She'll sleep for days after the initial incident, and wake up with a ravenous hunger. From there, she'll mostly remain bed-ridden for the next several weeks, as even walking short distances will wind her and strain her heart.
- After this actualization, she'll be able to tap into the Argent Energy with renowned control. Her ability to resonate with other sources of energy (people, technologies, etc.) and her ability to harness enhanced powers will be at-will. She'll also be able to attune herself to the world around her, primarily with regards to other people.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
While not directly mentioned in her backstory, as the events were foreshadowed by many things, Jashera did experience various traumas by UAC personnel and others. Many of her experiences happened after coming out as a trans woman, and into her later teens. Such things include abusive relationships, sexual harassment, verbal and physical assault, blackmail, and sexual assault/rape.
That said, Josephine was largely accepting of Jashera's identity and would help her pursue medical avenues before the eventual downfall of Earth.
As a result of the experimentations Olivia and the UAC conducted on Jashera's heart, she has found herself frequently visiting cardiac specialists for at least 6 months, if not longer. She has had a transapical ablation, or part of her heart removed, which helped her symptoms somewhat. Still, she suffers from heart arrhythmia, premature ventricular contractions, and heart murmurs. As such, Jas is very quick to get winded and is prone to shortness of breath, chest discomfort, chronic fatigue, lightheadedness, and (in extreme cases) fainting episodes. Due to the PVCs in particular, Jas is at increased risk of going into cardiac arrest.
Jas's name was changed legally to avoid the rogue UAC remnants from hunting her down and attempting to continue experimentation on her. As such, she does have a chosen Chinese name, but does not often (if at all) go by it. It's a name she guards closely, and the only person who knows it is Josephine.
English is Jas' fourth language. She was raised learning Bai and Mandarin, then learned Castillan Spanish and English from Josephine as a teenager.
Jas can often come across as cold or uninterested while conducting investigations or working in other regards, but she's a very bubbly and cheerful person when not on duty. She's physically affectionate/a touchy person, and often has no qualms being in close proximity to others.
Jas used to write poetry as a university student, and kept most of her works as copies. She's very embarrassed by them, as she thinks her writing was too flowery.
Jas loves nature and spending time outside. She has a variety of hobbies from computer gaming (competitive and casual), visiting arcades, going on walks, and visiting local landmarks. She also has a fondness for escape rooms.
Jas also collects things. She has a particular fondness for stuffed animals.
During the events of The Ancient Gods DLC, Josephine dies on Earth. Jashera learns about it when Dr. Hayden presents her with a safebox full of medical records and experimentation logs from Jas' childhood. Given his personality, and the events of The Ancient Gods requiring his focus given the personal risk to his well-being and status, Jashera doesn't learn much of anything from him and instead is left to research on her own.
BACKGROUND.
Jashera’s past is largely mysterious. While she cannot remember it, it existed. She existed. She was born to Duan Mei and Duan Qigang in the bustling county-level city of Anning, China, and lived a happy childhood. Both of her parents worked for the Union Aerospace Corporation (UAC), with her mother being executive researcher and her father being a programming technician Their involvement with the megacorporation allowed the family to lead a bountiful life, with her needs always met and the world at her fingertips. However, things changed as she reached her later childhood.
Trips to the UAC base on Mars became more frequent, and just as her memory retention began, the family moved to briefly live on the base. Jashera didn’t know at the time that they had enrolled her family—or rather, just her—in an experimental medical trial to observe how Argent Energy affected the human body. The program was headed by Olivia Pierce under close supervision of UAC Director Samuel Hayden. Jashera wasn’t the only child enrolled in the program, though she was the most successful candidate. Initially, the researchers focused on external exposure, enabling the children to touch concealed crystals before giving the surviving children raw energy crystals. When the number of viable candidates dwindled, the directive relocated the survivors to Earth’s origin facilities for limited observation and eventual impact reversal.
However, Olivia had different plans. She convinced the remnant parents that this experimentation would be a breakthrough for humanity. That it could lead to extended life, if not immortality. It could save millions of lives. Therefore, they took Jashera and the remaining children to an origin facility to continue the experimentation. It was here that the Duan family met Josephine Cordova, the head researcher of the facility and the secondary overseer of the experiments. Whereas Olivia had seen the children as nothing more than numbers, Josephine did well to encourage natural development and keep the parents involved with the processes so that the children wouldn’t become stressed. Even with Josephine’s efforts, the numbers continued to decrease, and they gave large sums of money—as well as intense threats—to families of the deceased to keep them quiet about the events. Once the losses stabilized, Olivia decided to take things further. Jashera, who was the strongest candidate at age 7, was enrolled for an intensive cardiac surgery where they would fuse Argent Energy crystals into her developing heart if it was successful. Knowing now that they had no choice, her parents signed the consent forms. From this point, Josephine was the one to take Jashera’s case personally, as Olivia found herself being called back to Mars for an important mission.
Thankfully for everyone, the surgery was a success. Jashera survived it, woke up, and they placed her under direct observation to monitor the energy fluctuations happening within her. It wasn’t long after, though, that things took a turn for the worse. Things devolved quickly, with a sudden spike in fluctuations causing the young girl to become increasingly panicked and ill. No amount of medication or intervention could quell things. The critical point was quickly reached... Then everything went dark.
An indeterminate amount of time passed, and Jashera woke up amidst the rubble of the lab she had called home. Her hands were covered in dirt and blood, and she could barely breathe as she looked around and cried out for help—for her parents. They never came. Instead, it was Josephine who stumbled across her broken body. The older woman knelt down and carefully dug her free, then pulled her into a tight embrace and kissed the top of her head. Without saying much, she took Jashera and ran as far as she could.
The duo spent a considerable time on the run, with Josephine vaguely filling in the blanks as Jashera tried to make sense of what happened. All she knew was that her parents were members of the UAC, that they were dead, Josephine was her grandmother, and that they would find somewhere safe. That place eventually became Morella, Spain; Josephine’s hometown.
Jashera lived in Morella for most of her teen years under the care of Josephine. While the past was still blurry, the two became considerably close. Josephine raised Jashera as if she were one of her own, and Jashera was comfortable alongside her grandmother in the Spanish hillside. As Jashera grew older, the two would eventually begin traveling to Madrid and spending extended vacations there. This was primarily due to the fact Jashera’s cardiac health was in question. Thankfully, a close friend of Josephine’s who worked at Hospital Universitario La Paz would take on Jashera’s case and keep the truth under wraps.
When Jashera came of age, and as Josephine told her more about her parents, she expressed an interest in returning to Anning. Though hesitant, Josephine realized that she could not keep Jashera hidden from the world forever and helped her find the means to move back home. Unfortunately for them, the invasion of Earth by Hell’s demons would put that plan on hold. Instead, Josephine directed Jashera toward the Armored Response Coalition (ARC). Founded by Dr. Samuel Hayden, the military organization provided safe harborage for surviving citizens and would be able to take care of her. Jashera pleaded with Josephine to come, but she insisted she would be safer on her own. So, Jashera made contact with the group and found herself on the Mobile Command Carrier, a seaborne command center. When she arrived, Dr. Hayden personally greeted her and would set her up with accommodations. He also directed her case to ARC medical staff, and she would continue to receive care for her condition, which she learned from Hayden stemmed from Argent Energy crystals within her heart. When she asked more, he simply said he could not help her find the answers she was looking for at that time, as his work with The Slayer took precedence.
Defeated but determined, Jashera volunteered to work with ARC as a technical data analyst and radio operator. Her work primarily has her stationed aboard the Mobile Command Carrier coordinating efforts between ARC subdivisions, however, she was stationed briefly at the primary land facility when Samuel Hayden’s torso was recovered from an excursion, and subsequently evacuated when a demonic invasion occurred (and The Slayer appeared to retrieve Hayden’s torso).
