Rayford trains coursers in armed and unarmed combat, investigative techniques, psychology, and mechanical skills. His primary specialties, however, are investigative techniques and psychological warfare.

Rayford chooses to live stealth, and will not divulge the fact he is transgender to most individuals he comes across. The only people who know this are Jocelyn, Marjorie, and Dr. Volkert.

BACKGROUND.

Born and raised in Mobile, Alabama, Rayford lived a fairly simple life alongside his parents and older sister. His father was a state attorney who practiced within the metropolitan area, and his mother was a teacher at one of the local high schools. Rayford showed an interest in law from an early age, often shadowing his father while he worked within the family’s home. His sister, Jessamine, volunteered with numerous local organizations and went to school for veterinary medicine. Upon graduating himself, Rayford enlisted as a cop while attending law school. It was during his late university years that Rayford had begun to realize that he was transgender. Due to complications with his circumstances, and a fear of coming out, Rayford remained in the closet and rose to become the police chief of Mobile. He worked within the department for just short of six years before transferring to the CIA’s branch office. It was during this time that he’d met Jocelyn and became infatuated with her. Jocelyn, like him, was transgender, and she helped him come to terms with his identity and begin the path to transition.

Rayford put his medical transition on pause when he and Jocelyn had decided they wanted to settle down together and have a family. Having only been undergoing hormone-replacement for a short period of time, it was fairly easy for Rayford to conceive using Jocelyn’s frozen sperm. Once Marjorie was born and developed beyond the need for personal feeding, Rayford continued his transition and underwent total sexual reassignment. This led to some complications work-wise, and so he retired out of the CIA to work for the district attorney’s office.

Due to his prior ties with the federal government, Rayford and his family secured a place within Vault 10. The vault, located in Massachusetts, was designed with no clear experimental purpose aside from the preservation of great American minds’. Vault Tec utilized Vault 10 as another cryostasis portal. Though, unlike Vault 111, Vault 10 was well stocked and a high percentage of cryogenically preserved residents were medically sound upon revival. The residents remained in the Vault for five years post-stasis for monitoring, then were authorized to leave at will. It was during this time that Rayford and Jocelyn decided to end things between them, as the duo couldn’t agree on whether to stay within the confines of the vault or venture into the wastes for greener pastures. Jocelyn remained behind and now works within Vault 10’s clinic.

Rayford peacefully left with his daughter, and it was not long before they found themselves at the doorstep of another great entity: The Institute. Having explored the then unoccupied ruins of the Cambridge Institute of Technology, Rayford and Marjorie found themselves witnesses to the secretive transportation methods of Institute assets. They were taken in for questioning, and presumably execution, and it was then that their origins were uncovered. Two untouched individuals, and a beacon of knowledge in the concepts of justice and authority.

Rayford and Marjorie were welcomed into the Institute on the condition they were to never leave, and it was then that Rayford took up the position within the SRB. Initially, he managed recall codes and analyzed combative data alongside the lower department heads. He worked his way up the ladder, eventually earning a comfortable position near the top. Now, Rayford aids in the evaluation and training of coursers, elite synth hunters and operatives designated to hunt down and reclaim synths that have escaped the Institute.
