BACKGROUND.

Scott joined the Systems Alliance military and was assigned to an outpost near Arcturus Station overseeing Relay 202. Here he specialized in infiltration operations. A primary route to Arcturus, this mass relay leads into contested space and has an unsavory reputation. Scott was needed to protect Arcturus, but also had “a front row seat to everyone else going off to fortune and glory.”

When Alec Ryder was dishonorably discharged due to his AI research, internal memos show that this also effectively ended Scott’s career, making Andromeda a more attractive option for the adventure he sought.

After the ark Hyperion arrives at the Andromeda galaxy, Alec Ryder leads the Pathfinder team to scout Habitat 7 for colonization. Electrical storms stranded the team and they have hostile encounters with an alien species called the kett. Eventually, Alec surmised that the kett are alien to the planet as well and were studying a Remnant structure. SAM elaborates that the Remnant tower is creating a dark energy cloud that is disrupting the world’s climate with uncorrected energy. Alec believes turning off the Remnant structure will clear the weather and make it feasible for the Hyperion to extract the Pathfinder team. It is during this initial encounter with the energy cloud that Scott learns that Sara is comatose.

Alec and the Scott eventually make it to the Remnant structure’s control console and Alec uses SAM to help him interface with the structure. Alec succeeds in shutting down the Remnant structure and stabilizing the world’s atmosphere, but activation of the processor also causes its purification field to throw both Ryders off the platform. The younger Ryder’s helmet is hit by a stray container, damaging it beyond repair. Alec requests immediate evacuation but realizing that they wouldn’t be rescued in time, decides to sacrifice himself and give up his helmet to save his progeny. Before Alec suffocates, he passes down the mantle of human Pathfinder to his rescued progeny by transferring SAM’s command access onto them.

Pathfinder Ryder commands the Tempest in their father’s absence and leads the search for humanity’s new home in the Heleus Cluster. As the only known Pathfinder to report to the Nexus, Pathfinder Ryder is tasked by the Nexus leadership to ensure the Andromeda Initiative’s success. Pathfinder Ryder’s goals are many: to make the planets of the Heleus Cluster hospitable for colonization, to find the missing arks, and to defend the Initiative from the hostile kett. To aid with their mission, Pathfinder Ryder is synced with an advanced Artificial Intelligence called SAM.

PATHFINDER CHOICES

Crisis on Habitat 7: During his trial-by-fire on Habitat 7, Scott tried to initiate peaceful first contact with the kett despite their hostility. He also explored an alien laboratory, found a cave full of plant life that survived from the planet’s “golden world” era, discovered alien shuttlecraft of unknown origin, and expressed doubts about accepting the role of Pathfinder.

Eos — The First Outpost: Scott explored and reactivated a mysterious alien vault apparently designed for terraforming, bringing the hope of new life back to Eos. Despite the potential kett threat, he guided the outpost on Eos on a mission of peaceful scientific exploration of the Heleus Cluster.

First Contact — The Angara: Scott secured the trust of the angara by proving himself an ally both on Voeld and Havarl. He supported Havarl’s research efforts and aided the Resistance in their fight against the kett.

The Moshae's Rescue: Scott saved Moshae Sjefa, but angered her by refusing to destroy the kett Exaltation facility. He made sure the kett Cardinal did not survive their meeting.
