Valerie’s first cybernetic installations were her arms, when she suffered a gnarly extensor tear that would have decommissioned her from her work. After that, she saved up and began dabbling into the world of cybernetic modifications.
BACKGROUND.
Valerie grew up in the Heywood District of Night City, raised by gangs. Both of her parents were working odd jobs for Sebastian “Padre” Ibarra between their day jobs, leaving Valerie to pick up in between and effectively join Padre’s crew as a teen. Here, she began to make a name for herself alongside the fixer. There was hardly a job she turned down, and eventually she slipped into the local athletics scene as an up-and-coming boxer. She met Bryan Quiñones through her work, and the two become a tight-knit duo. No job was done without the other present, and they were damn effective in what they did. However, the relationship began to grow one-sided. Valerie gave her all in trying to figure out what was going on with Bryan, and eventually pulled the plug after they got into a spat about the relationship’s trajectory and his alleged infidelity. This resulted in an attempt at retaliation, with rumors surfacing about how Valerie had victimized Bryan by breaking things off “on such short notice and with no reason”. Pissed off and watching as her reputation began to crumble beneath her feet, Valerie packed up and fled home in a fit of emotions. She grabbed her bike and just started driving, and didn’t stop until she’d ended up in Atlanta.
Across the nation, Valerie attempted to rebuild herself and her credibility. However, the streets just weren’t the same, and the city ended up failing her expectations. Though she initially left for Atlanta in 2075, she returned to Night City after realizing it was not going to work out. She returned home and immediately began working again, taking riskier jobs and putting herself in the ring more frequently.
Whilst recovering from a fight in El Coyote Cojo, Valerie agreed to help the bartender, Pepe Najarro, settle a debt with a serious fixer by the name of Kirk Sawyer. In exchange for paying the debt, Kirk sent Valerie to steal a Rayfield Aerondight from a corpo agent. After receiving a lift from her old friend Padre, Valerie proceeded with the job.
As she managed to enter and start the car, Valerie was stopped by Jackie Welles, who was also attempting to steal the vehicle. Unfortunately, they were quickly surrounded by the NCPD, led by officer Henry Stints, and were arrested. Though ordered to be executed by the vehicle’s owner - Kaoru Fujioka - she was instead knocked out badly and left bloodied in an alleyway of Heywood. After the ordeal, V and Jackie were properly introduced, the latter revealing that Kirk’s threats were actually empty. When he invited her for a meal, V hesitantly accepted, leading to their blossoming friendship.
Jackie helped V regain her footing after the incident with the NCPD, connecting her with a ripper doc by the name of Viktor Vektor and some of the city’s other fixers.
