MISC. INFO
Zakari’s primary weapon is a Dragunov SVD Soviet semi-automatic sniper rifle. In addition to this, he carries a Colt 1911 as his backup. He is often seen in a short-sleeved shirt with a white graffiti design, wearing one knee pad, and a red balaclava.
Zakari speaks Crow and can communicate using Plains Sign Talk.
Zakari embraces the Two-Spirit label as a way to describe the fact he is transgender (FtM) and gay.
Zakari is pre-op, and it is unlikely in his canon universe that he would ever fully transition. Generally speaking, before the apocalypse, many medications can be stored and preserved in the event of power outages or other events. However, even still, these medications do have expiration dates and medical centers would be the first to be scavenged (making it impossible to find what is needed). Additionally, it is very unlikely those who were gender reassignment surgeons would resume their pre-apocalypse jobs in the near future following a nuclear event.
Zakari’s hair is incredibly culturally significant for a number of reasons: The box braids are a protective hairstyle for Black individuals. The hair pipes are culturally significant among many Native tribes, especially Plains tribes. The colors pink and blue are (aside from a Highwaymen staple) culturally significant to the Crow tribe (pinks represent the rising sun, blues represent the sky).
Zakari has only cut his hair once, and that was when his grandparents died when he was 16.
BACKGROUND.
Born and raised in St. Xavier, Montana, Zakari was born to a close-knit community and family. During his developmental (pre-school) years, Zakari lived alongside his grandparents while his parents worked. He moved back into his parents’ home as he entered school, though the transition was not incredibly notable, as his parents and grandparents lived close together and the sides of the family often spent time together at one home or the other.
Throughout his education, Zakari developed a group of friends in which he went on to graduate Lodge Grass High with.
From an early age, as young as 5 or 6, Zakari recalls having memories of “waking up wishing he was in the correct body”. It wasn’t until he had begun going through puberty that the discomfort settled in, and it was around his early teen years when he first came out as transgender and begun socially transitioning. Those within his peer groups were accepting, as was his family. However, it was not until his senior year of high school that he had begun medically transitioning and taking testosterone.
Unfortunately for Zakari, his transition was halted (approx. 6 months in) when Joseph Seed and his cult unleashed a nuclear Armageddon upon the world. Moving into an underground bunker alongside numerous other families, Zakari spent his years learning defensive, survival, and mechanical skills. Years later, Zakari and others emerged to find their world in ruins. Flora begun to take over now decrepit remnants of the past, and St. Xavier began to rebuild. Things went well for the first two years of the return to the surface, however, this did not last long as the Highwaymen made their presence known within Montana. Seeing the prospering, budding community, the Highwaymen gave the community an ultimatum:
Join or die.
Some members of the community, Zakari’s mother among them, immediately joined alongside the Highwaymen’s ranks. Most lingered behind, hoping to build the forces to defend their community from the lingering threat. Resources began to grow scarce, and the Highwaymen’s promise of delivery had drawn more and more members to leave the community and join the ranks. Not long after the supplies began to dwindle, Zakari joined the Highwaymen. He was in his 20s then. During his service, Zakari developed a mentality of seeing anyone who didn’t support the Highwaymen’s vision as enemies. People fall into two categories: problem solvers and problem makers.
