Rogue Trader Character Questions (WH40K)

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN: April 2026

NOTES: There's mild suggestive content, but nothing explicit! Also all credits go to PheeDraws for this template! I wanted to archive this one in particular since it's more in depth than some question-based prompts.

— CASE FILE REGARDING: REMBRANDT JOSMENYA SCIPIO-GRIMALD STEINHÄUSSER VON VALANCIUS

BACKGROUND

1. Where are they from? What is their homeworld like? Do they miss it?

I'm not sure what particular planet I want to make their homeworld just yet, but they are from Imperial territory! They were raised in a fairly well-off world, at that. They do miss it, and would love the chance to go back to it at some point.

2. What is their Origin? Who were they before they became a Rogue Trader?

Rembrandt was an Astra Militarum Commander. As you could imagine by the portrait above, with the headcanon for its existence being an officially-commissioned portrait, they were quite the notable figure (for reasons that will be elaborated on later).

3. Do they have a good relationship with their family? Who were they closest to growing up?

They do! Their family was as traditional as it gets, really. Loving mother and father, has a sibling around the same age... That's who they're closest with, by the way. Them and their sibling are true ride or dies! I think I've vaguely mentioned this sibling, but I'm so making them a much more Dogmatic version of Rembrandt. And a sniper. Priest (but not really; unless I go the battlefield chaplain route) with big gun.

4. What does their name mean? Is it significant?

Breaking their name down: Rembrandt is a Germanic name composed of the elements regin (advice, counsel, decision) and brant (fire, torch, sword); it can be taken to mean something akin to ruling with an iron fist. Josmenya is a fictional name. Steinhäusser is a Germanic occupational surname for a stonemason or quarryman, from German stein (stone) and hauen (to chop or hew). All together, we could say their name means "the quarryman who advises with fire", potentially alluding to someone who is very strong in their convictions.
While not intentional, it's actually very significant given their characterization!
Then there is also the matter of their canonical introduction: "Lieutenant General Rembrandt Scipio-Grimald, Commander of the 8th Army of the Scanthuan Janissaries." ...
Scipio is an Italian (Sicilian) surname derived from the Latin scipio (stick or sceptre). Likewise, Grimald is technically fictional, but likely based on the Italian (Genoese) surname Grimaldi, derived from the Germanic Grimaldo or Grimwald (helmet, power, boldness). So, this surname in tandem with their first name, would allude to something along the lines of "the bold one who advises with a fiery sceptre". Which, again, alludes to someone who is very... very strong in their convictions.
Which now that I think about it... Fuck it, Steinhäusser is their mother's maiden surname. Grimald is their given surname, and Scipio... Well, keep reading to learn more!

5. Describe a memory from childhood they think of fondly.

There was a summer where them and their family traversed to Terra for some reason or another—likely business relating to one of their parents—but the two siblings were younger so they saw it as this glorious vacation. I mean, who wouldn't want to visit the throneworld?! Every moment the two could, Rembrandt and their sibling were exploring the areas around their shelter.
The core of the memory comes from the two of them sneaking into what was presumed to be an abandoned building, only for them to find a group of thugs duking it out over a poker (or in-universe equivalent) game gone wrong.

CHARACTER & CONVICTIONS

6. What is their Conviction? How adherent are they to it? Does it change at all over the course of the game?

I'd say Iconoclast if I had to pick just one, but it's really an interesting blend of Dogmatic and Iconoclast.
They do wholeheartedly believe in the Imperium, don't get them wrong. They just don't believe that they deserve to be judge, jury, and executioner in that regard. If they had orders to kill someone accused of being a heretic? Fine. But as a Rogue Trader, they don't get orders (usually), they have full control of the situation. So... They tend to be a might more thorough with their investigations and really get to the bottom of things before deciding who lives and who dies.
Over the course of the game, I feel like they're actually starting to circle back into the Dogmatic belief. Something something fury of the scorned and whatnot. That said, though, they are actively also going "Fuck the Inquisition" with every breath they take, so...

7. Was there a defining moment in their life that influenced their Conviction?

If we're talking in terms of the RT plot: Definitely the situation on Rykid Minoris. Narrowly surviving an encounter with a Chaos Space Marine and dipping in and out of consciousness due to the voice in your head, only to have everyone barking conflicting orders at you was… rough! Obviously! And the push-back to them saying to save as many civilians as possible only made it worse.
If we're talking overall: Definitely the moment of their Triumph.

8. What was their Triumph? Do they take pride in it?

Apex of Brilliance. Rembrandt was able to restore a broken Imperial Guard regiment to its former martial glory. The details are still being ironed out, but I imagine it's a regiment they ended up adopting command over due to the loss of their Commander.
To answer the second bit, though...

9. What was their Darkest Hour? How does it affect them today?

Brand of Shame. Rembrandt was the Commander of a disastrous military campaign and thus buried in shame. Again, the details are being ironed out, but this disaster cost the lives of said regiment. So circling back briefly, no, they are not exactly proud of their Triumph.
As they fall into the role of Rogue Trader and build their retinue, the cost of human life is constantly at the front of their mind. Having so many people under their command makes them itch, especially when so many things go wrong so quickly. It's why they try so hard to fight for everyone and, often, place themselves last to the point it could be considered a passive suicidality.

10. How do they feel about becoming a Rogue Trader? How easily do they take to being the head of the von Valancius dynasty?

They have a lot of mixed feelings, most of which are rather negative!
Like, the circumstances it happened under really just kind of soured the whole thing. They were skeptical going into it, but when Kunrad went behind their back and forced them into opening the chamber? Oh yeah, it was over from there. Then, of course, finding Theodora dead and realizing "Ah fuck, I really don't have a choice here huh?"
Not to mention the amount of corners Theodora was cutting, and how that drama has spiraled Rembrandt right into the eyes of the Inquisition.
Needless to say, it's a lot of work they were not expecting and now they're stuck cleaning up someone else's mess so that Humanity as they know it isn't snuffed out. It's quite hard and they struggle a lot with it, despite their outward confidence.

RELATIONSHIPS

11. Who amongst their retinue are they closest to?

Ooh... Excluding Abelard and Heinrix due to later answers (well, for Heinrix anyhow), I'd have to say Cassia, Sister Argenta, and Kibellah. Honorable mentions go to Ulfar and Solomorne, though!

12. Who amongst their retinue do they clash with the most?

Jae and Yrliet… Though that doesn't become much of a recurring issue after Act 3. After that whole mess, Rembrandt booted them both off the ship.

13. Are they romantically involved with anyone? Do they wish to be?

Yes; their canon romance is Heinrix!

14. Who was the most important person in their life prior to becoming a Rogue Trader? Is that person still in their life now?

So remember that I remembered they have a canonical hyphenated surname? Yeah! They were married. Emphasis on were—
These are very impromptu details, but the summary is: Rembrant Josmenya Grimald married a man by the name of Alida Scipio. It was a genuine relationship, not one made for any sense of appearances or status climbing. The two met through their service within the Astra Militarum and it was love on the battlefield, truly. Unfortunately, like most love born on the battlefield, it ended in tragedy. It happened when they were much younger, so it's something they've worked through the grief of and come to accept over the years... They just, frankly, didn't want to deal with the paperwork at the time for a name change and never really thought of it. So that's why they still carry the hyphenated surname. Eventually, they'll change it to Steinhäusser, and that likely happens after the events of RT.

15. How do they feel towards Theodora? Had they met before? Were they close?

Their first meeting was being summoned to the voidship... So needless to say they didn't have a lot of feelings! They were a bit taken aback by Theodora's... eclectic personality, but they honestly did admire her boldness in the few interactions they had.

SKILLS & EXPERTISE

16. What is their Archetype?

Operative!

17. What are their strengths in combat? What are their weaknesses?

Strengths: Firepower and a Tactician's Mindset. They have very well-loved weaponry and are always trying to think two steps ahead.
Weaknesses: A Tactician's Mindset and Hyperfocus. While these things can be good, they often fall victim to "tunnel vision" and an adept combatant can easily overwhelm them if given the opportunity.

18. How do they approach conflict? Do they tackle problems head-on, or is coercion favourable to them?

Oh they despise entering conflicts without knowing the details; coercion is definitely favorable if the moment provides the opportunity! Their whole thing is situational triage—assess the most immediate threats, secure controlled areas, prepare to bunk/utilize any cover necessary.

19. Which three skills are of the most value to them?

I'm trying to remember off the top of my head, so I could be wrong, but IIRC... Intelligence, Perception, and Willpower. More specifically from those overarching skills: Lore (Imperium), Awareness, and Tech Use.

20. Do they have a talent or hobby that would surprise others?

Scrimshaw! It's carving or engraving designs into ivory, bone, or shells. There's two reasons it's suprising to people—The first is because many view Rembrandt as a "left brain" personality, so them being artistic is confusing... for some reason. The second is because Rembrandt doesn't hunt for materials. Rather, they collect materials as they travel.

APPEARANCE & PERSONALITY

21. Do they have any notable markings? Scars, birthmarks, tattoos, etc.?
Vaguely gestures to the art. In all seriousness, yes! I say I want to do this with all of my OCs, but I'd love to make a scar chart because Rembrandt has many.

22. Do they have any augmentations? Were these installed out of necessity, or as a cosmetic choice?

Vaguely gestures to the art again. Yep! I actually talked about this more in-depth with my partner, so I'll just copy those notes.
Rembrandt's jaw augmentations are replacement mechanisms to counteract heavy facial trauma.
While they help restore and maintain function of the jaw, the fact they are augmentations (especially older ones) means they do not work at full capacity and thus results in mirroring the symptoms of Chronic Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD).
These symptoms include, but are not limited to: Jaw/Face Pain, Headaches/Migraines, Jaw Stiffness or Locking, Clicking/Popping/Grinding Sounds, Trouple Opening/Closing the Mouth, and Neck/Shoulder Pain.
Most commonly, Rembrandt experiences the pain, migraines, and stiffness. It's not often they hear much sound from the mechanisms due to the fact they maintain the components and keep them lubricated as needed.

23. How do they hold themselves? Is the persona they show the world different to who they truly are? Who is privy to the ‘real’ them?

They hold themselves leagues more confident than they really are. Truth be told, the amount of pressure placed on them has Rembrandt mentally checked out. But they know letting that become obvious is a very, very dangerous weakness, so they mask it under calloused bravado.
The only people privy to their truest self are Heinrix, Abelard, Idira, and Kibellah.

24. Do they place value in how their protectorate sees them? Does this sway their decisions at all?

Absolutely—their protectorate is much more 'in the game' than they are, so it's only natural, in their eyes, to emphasize the value and weight of their opinions. And that can mean making decisions based on said opinions.
The biggest example was Chapter 3's conclusion. I've touched on it before, but I genuinely feel like part of them could have very well forgiven Yrliet and Marazhai; they absolutely will carry that with them and eventually come to terms with it mentally.
But in terms of keeping them around? there was too much uncertainty and—given their background—they don’t want to make the same mistake they did in the past.
Ultimately, as nice as they’ve been trying to be, being effectively cornered by the whole party and being told “Hey, you’ve been taken advantage of too many times and it almost killed all of us, and most importantly you” kinda got to them. It really made them reflect on a lot of their interactions with the companions and where the line would be drawn in the end.

25. Wildcard: Share a fun fact, random thought, or headcanon about them!

Hmmm the only one that comes to mind, beyond the sudden marriage subplot(tm) that was developed mid-post is a bit NSFW. I'll try to keep it clean, but...
Have y'all seen jaw massages for TMD? If you haven't, check this page out. Anyway—
As a fellow chronic pain sufferer(tm), one of my fave tropes is medical care intimacy. Finding that vulnerable, innate connection and allowing it to become something sensual... ough! So like. Y'know. It can happen with them, and I wanna write a drabble of it between them and Heinrix, especially because with them, the bonus is some techplay/wireplay with the actual jaw augmentations themselves.
So yeah, long-winded way of saying one of the most valued and sacred forms of intimacy would be if their partner (Heinrix or someone else) massaged their jaw for them. It would take so much trust but god would it fix them KSJDKSKSLSK
